Code of Behaviour
Béasa

Coláiste Chríost Rí is an evolving Christian community committed to Catholic education; we pursue academic and sporting excellence within a unique Gaelic culture and tradition. Our curriculum maintains a creative balance between preperation for the workplace and development of the person --- Mission Statement

Aims and Objectives
A 'Code of Behaviour' maps out ways for cultivating growth in a community. Rules guide us in nurturing a committed Christian conscious of his personal dignity, aware of his heritage, and equipped to take his place in life. Our Mission Statement, sets out the elements of our ethos: a fundamental Catholic philosophy; a distinct Gaelic culture; a co-operative dedication to work; a committed home - school partnership; in sum - and this is the heart of the matter - our genuine effort to create a sense of community. But what are the positive and practical ways of achieving community?

A School Community
Clearly, Coláiste Chríost Rí is not just a school building - a community of place; it is a community of kinship where parents, pupils and teachers are linked together. Naturally, the building itself is the community's visible centre, where a pupil's security, a pupil's belongings and school property are respected. Mostly, though, it is a community of mind where we bond together through shared vision, values and goals. In such a commuinty expectations are clear. Ignoring responsibility to others or endangering their welfare is a serious breach of discipline, and parents and teachers are obliged to correct an offender, if he is to keep his sense of belonging to our community.

In an environment of belonging, each member has a right to feel personally secure; to know that he is respected. While dealing positively and compassionately with a reluctant or recalcitrant minority, the needs of the co-operative and compliant majority come first. Our school attempts to cater for all its students in a balanced, comprehensive way, combining regular classwork with a variety of cultural and recreational outlets. Student participation is expected and achievements are recognised, lauded and celebrated. In a community, it is place, kinship and being of one mind that matter.

Our Way of Discipline
Clearly, Coláiste Chríost Rí is a challenging place. To create mutual trust and respect, we have our 'Code of Behaviour'. Students assimilate its spirit and purpose; they realise progressively that discipline is not solely the responsibility of staff or parents - it is a duty borne equally by staff, parents and students. A student learns how his behaviour reflects upon himself, his family and his school. In accepting a place for their son, parents subscribe to our Aims and Objectives. They ensure that their boy is involved in and committed to the Coláiste Chríost Rí community; they understand that he is obliged to observe our 'Code of Behaviour'.

Three principles underpin this 'Code of Behaviour'. First: every member of our school community - whether parent, pupil or teacher must be afforded the utmost courtesy and respect. Second: all students and staff have the right to work in an educational environment free from disruption. And third: the school community atmosphere and spirit is secured by Rules. Rules regulate behaviour, safeguarding the many who do behave from the misdeeds of those who don't.

Our Code of Behaviour

Rule 1 - Ethos
A student should uphold the school ethos and be co-operative, courteous and respectful at all times. Our welcoming and physically pleasant environment promotes teaching and learning. A student is expected to co-operate with teachers, to be courteous to all staff members, fellow students and visitors, and to show respect for property, for the school building, for its furniture and surrounds.

Rule 2 - Classwork
The guiding principle in the classroom is that the teacher should be allowed teach and the student allowed learn, without interruption. The teacher's aim is that each pupil achieve his full potential. Where the right atmosphere exists, the teaching - learning process is pleasant and enjoyable. Disruptive behaviour is not tolerated. Mobile phones and electronic or battery-operated appliances are not allowed. In class, punctuality, co-operation and genuine effort are expected. A boy's actions or omissions, which in themselves may not be serious, can by repetition become a hindrance to classwork.

Rule 3 - Activities
One of the principal aims of the school is the cultivation and promotion of the Irish language, our Irish games and native culture in general. Pupils are expected to co-operate in promoting the use of Irish in and around the school, to use it when speaking to teachers and as much as possible, when speaking to others. The official school games are Hurling, Gaelic Football and Athletics. Pupils are expected to take part in and support these games in preference to any others. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the additional extra-curricular activities organised by the school.

Rule 4 - Absence
Students may not leave the school without permission. A pupil absent without permission must tender a written explanation from his parents. No student should be absent from class, except for a serious reason. Students requiring a 'cead imeachta' must have this request in writing from their parents. Notes should be written in the student's journal.

Rule 5 - Dress
Conscious of preserving the good name of home and school, we constantly stress the need for the very highest standards of personal appearance, cleanliness and dress. Students are therefore required to wear full school uniform at all times. This consists of plain dark-grey trousers, school puul-over and tie, shoes (not runners) are the required footwear. We appreciate parents' efforts in helping us implement the Coláiste Chríost Rí Dress Code.

Rule 6 - Health and Safety
A healthy life-style is encouraged. Our Health Education Programme deals with substance abuse, the value of a drug-free school and locality, and the recognition of the dangers of using illegal and, at times, legally accepted drugs. Consequently, the taking of alcohol, drugs, and banned substances, (with the exception of prescription medicines), is absolutely forbidden to pupils while engaged in any activity connected with the school. Smoking damages health; it is strictly prohibited in the school building and its environs. In the interest of safety, lazer pens, bottles of correction fluid or any objects capable of causing injury are absolutely prohibited.

Bullying - repeated verbal, psychological or physical aggression, against others either by individuals or groups - is not tolerated.

Rule 7 - The School Day
- Classes are from 8.40am to 3.45pm. Pupils should be in the school yard five minutes before classes start. Entry and exit points are assigned to each class. Pupils may not enter/exit by the main door.

- Pupils may not leave their classroom between classes. They should remain seated in their assigned places. Students may go to the toilets only with the permission of the incoming teacher. Pupils should use the bathrooms at the midmorning and lunchtime breaks.

- At he midmorning break, pupils must vacate the classrooms, but may not leave the school premises. During lunch-break (12.45 pm to 1.45pm), pupils may eat their lunch in the halla, but not in the classrooms. They must then, however, either leave the building at 1.15pm or remain for study in assigned centres. Roving around the school corridors during lunch-break is not permitted. Pupils must avoid the out-of-bounds areas during break time. Cycling is prohibited in the school yard; students should walk alongside their bicycles.

- At recess times, pupils should not congregate in front of shops, in or near the Church grounds, on Capwell Road or on Capwell Avenue. Cyclists should observe the Rules of the Road. No pupil should be in the school yard/grounds once school closes.

- Classrooms in particular, and the school in generl should be litter-free. Pupils are encouraged to use the litter bins to maintain a clean environment. In each class, one pupil is responsible for windows, one for lights and one for the Class Roll. All pupils are responsible for a litter-free classroom.
