Curriculum
Curaclam

Vision without work is a dream; work without vision is drudgery. But vision with work is a dawn - a new hope and a new day. Every day. In class, courtesy, co-operation and genuine commitment are expected. Each new day meshes the teacher's aspiration to teach with the pupils ambition to learn. A pupils working day centres around a range of subjects taken for Junior and Senior Cycles. For some, the choice may also include opting for Transition Year or taking L.C.V.P.

Junior Cycle
All Junior Cycle students study the following subjects:

Religion
Science
Physical Education
Irish
Computer Studies
Health Education
English
History
Civic, Social & Political Education
Mathematics
Geography

Along with the above, Junior Cycle students will study a number of subjects from the following list:

Business Studies
Material Technology (Metal)
French
Material Technology (Wood)
German
Technical Graphics
Art

The opportunity for subject choice from the second list may vary from year to year, depending on factors such as student numbers, availability of teachers, etc.

Students are offered the opportunity to study History and Geography through Irish, if they wish. It should be remembered when choosing optional subjects that a European language is a requirement for entry to N.U.I. colleges (ie UCC,UCD, NUI Galway and NUI Maynooth). Specific courses in other colleges may also require a European language.

Where less than 12 students opt for a subject, it will not be feasible to form a class in that subject. Every effort will be made to provide all students with their first choice subjects. Since this may not be possible in every case, prospective students are asked to indicate their second choice in each Block on the Application Form.

Transition Year Option
After Junior Certificate, a Transition Year is an option for interested students. The good trier is the preferred candidate. Our Transition Year Programme is designed to meet the present and particular needs of our own students who are exposed to a broad range of subjects and are involved in an expansive educational venture. Traditional teaching methods are maintained and a diverse range of Leaving Certificate subjects covered. This strategy puts a student in a position of advantage in deciding his 5th Year options.

L.C.V.P Option
The LCVP can best be described as a Leaving Certificate which incorporates a useful vocational dimension provided for students in a way which frees some of their potential for self-directed learning, innovation and enterprise. The programme aims to balance the virtues of the traditionally academic Leaving Certificate with the development of skills and qualities which will prove relevant to the lives of students on leaving school for further education or the world of work.

For a more indepth view and further information on the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, please check the Guidance & Counselling section of the Coláiste Chríost Rí website, or you can visit the official LCVP Website.
