Management of Discipline Problems.
(To be Read in Conjunction with our Code of Behaviour)

Initial Stage - Subject Teacher

When a student first presents a problem it is usually in classroom context. It is a guiding principle of the college's disciplinary system that problems are handled at the earliest possible stage. The teacher at class level will usually reprimand the student and may, if the situation demands, apply one or more of a range of standard sanctions. These include additional homework, a note to the parents in the pupil's gradual and assigned seating. The teacher may demand an apology. If the transgression is serious, or part of a persistent pattern, detention may be applied. If the transgression is work related, the student may be asked to present his homework for evaluation at the commencement of each class. In addition, the student may be required to have his journal signed by a parents/guardian every night. In more serous cases the teacher may seek a meeting with the student's parents or place the student under close observation for a period, during which even the most minor breaches of discipline will be recorded.

In cases where the misbehaviour is persistent, serious or occurring across a broad spectrum of difference classes the student may be referred to the Class Teacher.

Second Stage - Class Teacher
The Class Teacher will endeavour to restore the student's good relationship with his teachers and re-integrate home into the positive learning environment. However, where the student does not respond it will be necessary to apply further sanctions. These include detention after school or parents being consulted.

Third Stage - Year Head/Tutor
In cases where previous efforts at rehabilitation have failed the Class Teacher shall refer the student to the Year Head. Issues in relation to the student shall be discussed at the Year Heads' weekly meeting. Through our Incident / Serious Incident Report system an ongoing review of the student's behaviour shall be maintained, including recommendations in relation to all our support systems, Counsellors, Pastoral Care Team, School Chaplain.

If the student is unwilling to respond to in-school sanctions, it will recommend to the Principal/Deputy Principal that the student be suspended for a stated period. In extreme cases the Principal, following consultation with the Deputy Principal and Year Head, shall recommend that the school resign its charge of the student. The student's case will then be forwarded to the Board of Management for its decision.

Where the Board of Management is of the opinion that a student should be expelled, prior to notifying the student it shall notify the Education Welfare Officer in writing of its opinion and the reasons therefor. The Education Welfare Officer will consult with the school and the parents to ensure that provision is made for the continued education of the student. A student may not be expelled before a passing of 20 school days following receipt of notification by the Welfare Officer. The Board of Management has a right to take such other reasonable actions as it considers appropriate to ensure the good order of the school and the safety of other students.

Where the Board of Management or a person acting on behalf of the board suspends or expels a student the parents, within reasonable time, may appeal that decision to the Secretary General of the Department of Education & Science in accordance with Section 29 of the Education Act 1998.

Details of procedures to be followed are available from the School.

Note:
Records of misbehaviour are maintained by the school, in addition to the usual school records.

There are certain breaches of discipline which the school Coláiste Chráost Rá views as extremely serious and which are dealt with directly by the Principal and the Deputy Principal. These include bullying, smoking, fighting and damage to property.
